In this exciting program, young learners will have a chance to gain a deep understanding of their passions. Vanessa Steck, M.Ed, will work with your learner to develop a collaborative learning plan that provides an in depth exploration of a topic or idea. We will discuss what the learner wants to know more about, how they like to learn, and what feels best to them. We will work in a way that is accessible to a variety of ages and neurotypes.
Our sessions will take place weekly and will involve a mix of collaborative planning, videos, books, library visits, and one culminating field trip (this will be an extra long class). Each session prior to the field trip will be 90 minutes and will be a mix of content delivery through books, videos, and creating presentations or projects; collaborative problem solving; and play. Sessions will also focus on emotional regulation skills as we talk about learning and how to deal with frustration and roadblocks while we are exploring our interests and working on projects. Learners will discover how to do basic research via visiting local libraries and working with the librarian to find books and other media that help them to further their understanding. Learners will also begin to develop their presentation skills as we figure out together the best way to present what they've learned--a book they'll write and/or illustrate, a video they'll make, or anything else they'd like to share!
Vanessa has over 20 years experience working with children of all ages. She has nannied, taught preschool and Pre-K, ran a youth program, and worked with kids with a variety of neurodivergence, including autism, PDA, anxiety, and more. She is deeply comfortable with kids of all kinds and is known for being loving and fun. She has special expertise in helping with emotional regulation.
In addition to the joy of watching their child get to delve deep into something they really love, parents will receive weekly communication discussing their learner's strengths, things we are working on, and discoveries made, plus questions and discussion points for home
use. Vanessa can also provide write ups for homeschoolers and can tie our work together to education standards.
